A policeman has been arrested for allegedly assaulting and raping an 18-year-old woman in a night attack in Nakuru county. Police constable John Waweru was accused of attacking the waitress as she headed home at about 10pm on Monday night.
The woman, who is six months pregnant, said she ran away from the officer but that he caught up with her and raped her after biting her lips.
“When the condom did not work he removed it and pushed it into my mouth and then proceeded without it,” she said.
The woman said she had never spoken to Waweru but knew he worked at Keringet police station. “I identified the officer but could not escape because the energetic cop pinned me down. I screamed for help… A passerby came to my rescue and the enemy fled,” she said.
Six Administration Police officers arrested Waweru on Tuesday afternoon at his house in Nakuru town after Nyumba Kumi officials reported the matter. A resident only identified as Onyino said on Tuesday morning that the woman had fresh lip wounds when she reported the attack to him.
“I got the information from her and immediately collected some funds from well-wishers for a medical check-up and P3 form before we reported the matter,” he said.
Onyino said slow response by area police forced them to alert Patrick Wafula, the AP officer in charge of Kuresoi South subcounty, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
But the woman said she feared for her life, adding officers at the station where the policeman is being held have the original copy of the P3 form. She claimed some of the officers and elders offered her a Sh100,000 bribe, asking her not to talk to the media.
Kuresoi OCPD Paul Rono said investigations into the “serious allegations” were launched. But he noted that the accused officer has a bad record and was facing disciplinary action for previous offences.
