Royal Media Services (RMS) has poached a senior editor from CNBC Africa to strengthen its Citizen TV team. Mr Joseph Bonyo, who is CNBC Africa’s chief editor for East Africa, is expected to soon join Citizen TV as News Editor.
Mr Bonyo, who confirmed he has reached a deal with RMS after about a month of negotiations, will be joining the leading broadcast house in Kenya at a time when it’s restructuring its operations to have a leaner but more targeted staff component.
“CNBC Africa offered me a fantastic opportunity across the East Africa region,” Mr Bonyo, who has worked for the South African-based international TV house for two years, told BusinessToday this morning. “However, the new role at RMS offers a new dimension to my career profile.”
As news editor, he will be at the centre of setting Citizen TV’s news agenda in conjunction with the Managing Editor and other section editors. He will join Shisia Wasilwa, who is the Kiswahili news editor. The fate of current news editor, Kimeli arap Kemei is not clear.
It will be a different ball game for Mr Bonyo, who has worked on business news most of his career since his times as a reporter at Daily Nation and a stint at KTN as business editor.
But his is upbeat saying, “news coverage remains the same….same expertise for both business and general news.”
Media houses are on the spotlight and audiences are keenly watching how they cover the 2017 elections, with campaigns already under way.
Citizen TV – being the most popular TV station in Kenya and recently voted among the most influential brands in Kenya, is building a team of journalists who it hopes will deliver fair and unadulterated news and analyses to keep its reputation.
At Citizen, he will reconnect with his former colleagues at KTN such as Michael Karanja, who recently joined the business desk, Mercy Kandie (features) and Sam Ogina (news).
