Othaya MP Mary Wambui yesterday clashed with Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa for referring to her as ‘Wambui Kibaki’ during debate.

The Othaya MP rose to make a statement and demanded the name Kibaki be withdrawn from the Hansard .

She told MPs she is “a saved Christian and an active member of the PCEA church,” and quoted scripture on the floor of the House. “I have worked hard to get where I am today,” Ms Wambui said.

But Wamalwa said wittily that he did not mean she is related to the former President but is heading a constituency where Mwai Kibaki is the former MP.

Wambui’s relationship with former President Kibaki is not secret. But the two have chosen to shun each other in public. During Kibaki’s presidency there was drama after a newspaper unmasked Wambui, referring to her as Kibaki’s second wife.

This forced Kibaki to issue a statement clarifying that he had only one wife, Lucy Kibaki, in what turned out to be one of his most embarrassing moments of his presidency. But that did not quell rumours and speculation about their relationship. Family members and friends have corroborated the fact that Wambui, who succeeded Kibaki in Othaya, is indeed the Kibaki’s second wife.
