Laura Akunga, the woman who stirred the social circles when she bought her husband a Ksh10 million top-of-the-range car on his 30th birthday, has been sued over ksh17.6 million debt.
The Star reports that the businesswoman fell sick after learning that an Asian businessman, Mr Sriram Bharatam, had taken the matter to court. “Laura went into shock and was hospitalised…,” the Star quotes an unnamed source.
Her drama started on Saturday June 27 after she posted a picture of the car, Toyota Landcruiser V8, she bought the husband.
Her financial deals with Bharatam started on July 1, 2013, when Bharatam offered Laura a position on the board of Iridium Interactive. But year later, Laura resigned. The Star reports that between 2014 and 2015, Laura started borrowing money from Bharatam but could not pay back. The businessman said he came to Laura’s rescue in January 2013 when she experienced financial difficulties.

On March 31, Bharatam filed a case at Milimani Commercial Courts claiming Laura had defaulted. He said he lent her Ksh4.9 million in cash. Laura allegedly owed Family Bank Ksh40million which she had guaranteed someone who defaulted. “In April 2013, Laura reached out to me seeking more funding. She gave me a detailed plan of the new business she intended to start. Her ideas seemed legitimate,” he says.
Mr Bharatam says Laura reached out to him again seeking financial assistance after failing to pay one of her suppliers, Granada Trading. “I coordinated and sent Ksh7.35 million by bank transfer and further arranged cash locally making sure she was able to settle the debt,” he said.
He says Laura indicated that her company makes around Ksh80 million to Ksh90 million. “When I asked for financial records, she kept giving flimsy excuses. I later gathered that the company only makes between Ksh6 and Ksh8 million,” he said.
