Sales double for Ms Victoria Mutheu, who says Uhuru paid Ksh1,000 for Soda but never asked for balance

They say the day you walk naked is the day you meet your mother in law.

And so it was perhaps for Victoria Mutheu on Wednesday. At her kiosk in Matungulu, Ms Mutheu, 48, rarely runs out of the most popular brand of soda – Coke. But on this sunny afternoon, she did. Then she gets a high-profile guest – the President no less –who really wanted a Coke to quench his thirst.

Ms Mutheu ended up serving President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto and Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua Fanta pineapple – which they downed with chapati.
She has turned into an instant celebrity in this sleepy town. She says she is proud to have met the President and shared a light moment with him.

The mother of three says Uhuru’s visit to her kiosk was a surprise.  She did not expect the President to be “such a down to earth man”.  “I was surprised when he asked me to open a bottle of soda for him. It was a great pleasure for me because I have always imagined that the President cannot interact with people of a lower class,” Ms Mutheu says.

The President paid Ksh1,000 for six bottles of soda and a packet of milk and never asked for change.  Ms Mutheu said on that day, she made Ksh10,000 profit, up from Ksh3,000 she makes daily.  Uhuru was her lucky charm, she says. “The President was in a hurry and did not promise me any appointment but he directed Mule to see how I would be assisted,” she said.

Ms Mutheu said she is contented with the publicity her Kiosk received that day as it improved her sales. “There are people who come from far just to see the kiosk where the President bought a soda, which has improved my sales,” she said.
