OLX, the online classifieds site, has introduced a new feature that allows users to pay a small fee and have their adverts remain at the top section of the listings page to increase their visibility. This will in turn increase the chances of selling by up to 10 times, according to OLX.

The fee ranges from Ksh999 to Ksh5,499, depending on the category of item and the number of days the user wants to remain at the top ad section.  Mr Peter Ndiang’ui, OLX Country Manager said this was part of the company’s strategy to improve user experience while making some revenue.

“Initially, all ads on the platform were free and visibility was dependent on the time an advert was posted. The free service has helped to bulk up the user base for a deeper, more fulfilling experience for users. It is important to note that posting on OLX will always be free. We have added a pay option feature for those seeking to sell their items faster by increasing visibility”.

He said some of the users are already paying for ads to have their items appear at the top of the listings. “We realized that some sellers who come to OLX wish to sell their items quickly to make money and do not mind paying a small fee to appear at the top,” Mr Ndiang’ui added.

OLX will also allow brands and organisations that want to reach OLX users to place banners on the home page and the different category pages. Mr Ndiang’ui said OLX users already have the intent to buy hence are easy to convert, making it a great opportunity to reach out to ready market.

Currently, OLX has over 150,000 daily visitors. Mr Ndiang’ui said that the fastest selling goods on the platform are phones and electronics, followed by vehicles and real estate.
