Peter Opondo, the Group Managing Editor of Mediamax, has left the media house. Mediamax Networks Ltd – which runs k24, People Daily, Milele FM and Kameme Radio – announced yesterday in a memo that Peter Opondo, who came in from Citizen TV, had left to venture into business.
The company’s CEO Ian Fernandes said Mr Opondo had resigned to venture into private business. According to the Memo, Opondo resigned in May but was asked to stay on to facilitate the transition and launch of new products. His replacement has not been named.
Mr Opondo is understood to have teamed up with other investors to start a TV production company for news, features and documentaries across Africa. But some sources said Opondo’s left due to frustrations in doing his job as GME of Mediamax, which is owned by the Kenyatta family.
During his final days at Mediamax, Opondo was embroiled in a standoff with one of his junior journalists over the Pastor James Ng’ang’a fatal accident story. Dan Muhuni, who is in charge of Facebook and Twitter, is currently on suspension. His case was heard yesterday by top editors but a decision on what action should be taken against him has yet to be reached.
Peter Opondo has joined the likes of Alex Chamwada and Catherine Kasavuli, who quit screen jobs to focus on private business. Ms Kasavuli runs a broadcast coaching outfit while Mr Chamwada produces content for KTN.
