Male wards at the Ruiru Level 4 Hospital are for the most part unoccupied due to reluctance of most men to seek in patient treatment in hospital unless they are critically ill. Medical personnel said men in this region only visit the hospital when they were victims of assault or accidents.

Witnesses say that men only present themselves for treatment when they are injured at construction sites. Majority of the men will mostly be taken to the hospital after being involved in motor bike accidents.

“When men come to hospital, they are sometimes very critical that we cannot handle them here and the best we can do is refer them to Thika, Gatundu or Kiambu referral hospitals,” says Nursing Service Manager Mrs Virginia Kariuki.

Talking from her office, the Nursing officer in charge of the health facility regretted that men do not care about their health as much as women do. “You will find at least 95 percent of the people coming to hospital are women. Some of them will be bringing their children while others will be concerned about any cough and a feeling of discomfort which is very good,” she said.

The nurse explained that it was important to remain healthy by responding to any abnormal feeling so that in case you have contracted a disease it can be contained before it spreads in the body. She said diseases like cancer and HIV can be contained if diagnosed early enough.

She regretted that the male wards could not alleviate the congestion of patients on admission because of the infrastructure which was put up long time ago. “Even if we do not have many male patients visiting the hospital, we cannot relocate the big number of women to use them as we cannot make them share the facility,” Mrs Kariuki said.
