Mama Sarah Onyango Obama, the step-grandmother of former US President Barrack Obama, is dead.
Her demise was confirmed by her daughter, Marsat Obama, who told journalists that her mother died at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kisumu at 4.45am on Monday.
She had been admitted to the hospital on the morning of Sunday 28th March 2021.
The family is making arrangements to have her buried today (Monday, 29th March 2019) at the Muslim Cemetery in Kisumu.
“We are trying to see whether we shall be able to bury her today and if not, we shall bury her tomorrow,” a relative said.
Sarah Onyango Obama was born around 1922 and is remembered as a Kenyan educator and philanthropist. She was the third wife of the paternal grandfather of U.S. President Barack Obama.
She was living in Nyang’oma, K’ogelo village.
Although she is not a blood relation, Barack Obama calls her “Granny Sarah”. Sarah spoke Luo and only a few words of English. She often communicated with President Obama through an interpreter.
On July 4, 2008, Sarah Obama attended the United States Independence Day celebrations in Nairobi, hosted by Michael Ranneberger, the U.S. ambassador in Kenya.
During the U.S. presidential campaign, Mama Sarah protested attempts to portray Obama as a foreigner to the United States or as a Muslim saying that Obama’s father was a Muslim and in the world of today, children have different religions from their parents.

On November 19, 2014, Sarah Obama received the Pioneer Award from the United Nations for the work of an education foundation that she headed, as a part of Women’s Entrepreneurship Day.
She has died at the age of 99 years.
