Wazito FC Captain Dennis Gicheru has urged players to focus on the prize of lifting the National Super League (NSL) trophy and guarantee a place in the Kenya Premier League (KPL) next season.
Gicheru, who is a practicing lawyer, was grateful to players for turning out like champions in every match. “In the last two games, we have scored winning goals in the last minutes. It is not desirable but it shows how we are focused as a team,” he remarked.
Gicheru can be considered an expert at this. He was in the Wazito team that secured promotion to KPL two seasons ago before joining KCB where he also helped them secure promotion to the top-flight league, before returning to the fold.
One would imagine he is ‘afraid’ of playing in the Premier League, since every team he helps secure their promotion, he opts to again play in the Super League.
Since mid-season, his pairing with veteran defender Lloyd Wahome has been perfect, with each covering for the other. He is also learning from the instructional play that Wahome exhibits, doing mini-coaching in the field.
“Wahome’s experience is exceptional. When you play with him, you see his comfort with the ball. He also coaches us inside the game, something we value,” he said.
He is a leader on and off the pitch in how he carries himself.
In the match against Administration Police, the pair secured the winning goal. Wilson Anekeya took a corner which he jumped to flip it to the left corner. Wahome who was near it confirmed it by heading it home. There was a possibility that failing to confirm it, it could have hit the post or missed it by a whisker.
“We are playing a game a time. We are only focused on the next game against Nairobi Stima. That is the only game on our minds. And when we head to the pitch, we focus for 90 minutes,” he said.
