Gulf Air MD and former Deloitte CEO join BAT Kenya board

BAT Kenya has added two new members to its board of directors.

Effective July 1, a former Deloitte chief executive as well as the Managing Director of Gulf Air Kenya will assume their roles on the board of the cigarette makers.

In a public notice signed by company secretary Waeni Ngea, the firm said that Samuel Oketch Onyango and Dr Samson Macharia Irungu had been appointed as non-executive directors.

“The Chairman and Directors of BAT Kenya congratulate and welcome Dr. Irungu and Mr. Onyango to the board,” said  Ngea.

Dr. Irungu is the MD of Gulf Air Kenya and also sits on the board of the Energy & Petroleum Regulatory
Commission as well as Total Kenya Ltd.

“He has over 28 years experience in various senior management roles within the oil industry in and outside Kenya,” said BAT.

As well as being a member of the Kenya Institute of Management and the Institute of Directors (Kenya), he is also a member of the American Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Irungu holds a PhD in Strategic Management and a Master’s degree in Business Management (Marketing) from Newport University (USA), alongside a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Nairobi.

Mr Onyango is the immediate former CEO of Deloitte East Africa and has  served for 38 years in various audit roles.

His past roles include being Chair of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya and president of the Eastern, Central and Southern Africa Federation of Accountants.

Onyango holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi and is a certified Accountant and Company Secretary.

He is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (England and Wales), Institute of Certified Secretaries (Kenya) and Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya.

The two additions to the BAT Kenya board come after Mahmud Jamnamohamed retired from being a director at the firm.
