Black Friday: Kenyans to spend average of Sh7,500

The average Kenyan is likely to spend Ksh 7,500 on Black Friday this year, a report by Black Friday Global, a consortium of E-Commerce platforms in Kenya has revealed.

BCG’s report reveals that 48% of Kenyans know what Black Friday is and 30% of them will participate in Black Friday this year which will run from November 2 to November 30.

According to the report, the average discount in Kenyan online stores reached 53% last year which translated into savings of Ksh 8,457 per every Kenyan who shopped during Black Friday.

Further, 10.44% of Kenyans participated in Black Friday last year with the percentage expected to grow to 29.96% this year, the report states.

In addition, the report further reveals that 23.64% of Kenyans sought Black Friday deals only in brick and mortar stores in 2017 while 18.06% of Kenyans have sought the deals in brick and mortar stores in 2018.

Similarly, 56.18% of Kenyans sought Black Friday deals on online stores in 2017 while the percentage has increased to 60.18% this year.

Last year, 20.19% of Kenyans sought Black Friday deals in both brick mortar and online stores while 21.77% of Kenyans have sought the deals in both avenues in 2018.

“Over the past 5 years, the popularity of this shopping event has been growing. The survey suggests that 30% of Kenyans will participate in Black Friday this year representing an increase of 19.5 percentage points compared to 2017. 60% of consumers will only shop online, the rest will either opt for traditional offline-only 18% or multi-channel option 22%,” reads the report.

This year’s Black Friday is expected to have a total of 3 million different items on sale.
