Former University of Nairobi professor Alloys Tumbo-Oeri is dead. Prof Oeri died from a suspected heart attack.
His nephew, Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka, said he collapsed in his house at about 4 am on Wednesday and was pronounced dead at the hospital to which he was taken.
Oeri served as UoN’s Chiromo campus principal and often appeared on KTN News as a panelist in debates on political and social issues.
Kisii Governor James Ongwae mourned the late Tumbo-Oeri as a reputable scholar who had a keen interest on issues affecting his community and country.
“Prof Tumbo-Oeri welcomed me to the University when I joined as a young man and we have been friends since that time. He distinguished himself as a reputable scholar who had a keen interest on issues affecting his community and country – both political and general management,” the governor said.
“Barely three weeks ago, we invited him as a facilitator during the joint induction workshop for the County Executive and County Assembly where he gave use good advice on management of the county. On behalf of the Kisii County Government, I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the late Prof. Oeri. Kisii County has lost a great son,” he added.

He is among a group of university dons who joined hands to prop up the regime of former president Moi when he was under threat of being voted out during the first multi-party elections in 1992.
Others included Kenyatta University lecturers Dr Eric Aseka, Dr Henry Mwanzi and Dr Mosonik arap Korir and Dr Ken Ouko of the University of Nairobi.
