The ruling United Democratic Alliance has intensified its political offensive against former President Uhuru Kenyatta through a blistering 12-page open letter accusing him of bitterness, economic sabotage and undermining President William Ruto’s administration.

The letter, dated May 26, 2026, and signed by UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire and Secretary General Hassan Omar, marks one of the strongest public attacks yet by the ruling party against Kenyatta.

Titled “An Open Letter to President Kenyatta: Let Us Stop the Pretence,” the letter accuses the former head of state of “intense bitterness, fierce jealousy, endless envy, and toxic obsession” with Ruto following the 2022 General Election.

“It is a fact that William Ruto won the 2022 election against your wishes and political schemes. For once, be a democrat,” the party stated.

UDA claimed Kenyatta handed over “one of the most broken governments in Kenya’s modern history,” accusing his administration of leaving behind a collapsing economy, unsustainable debt, weakened institutions and economic sabotage designed to make the Kenya Kwanza government fail.

The party referenced remarks allegedly made by Kenyatta during an Azimio Parliamentary Group meeting, claiming he expected the country to collapse within months after Ruto assumed office.

“In fact, one could reasonably ask whether the real objective in 2022 was not merely securing victory for your preferred candidate, the Right Honourable Raila Odinga, but rather creating conditions that would later allow you to return draped in the garments of a false saviour,” the letter stated.

UDA defended the Kenya Kwanza administration’s economic record, saying Ruto had stabilized the economy and prevented Kenya from defaulting despite inheriting what it described as a “ticking time bomb.”

The party further accused Kenyatta of destroying the agricultural sector, citing rising fertilizer prices, struggling sugar factories and low coffee earnings during his tenure.

According to the letter, fertilizer prices had risen to KSh7,500 per bag under Kenyatta but have since dropped to KSh2,500 under Ruto’s administration. UDA also claimed coffee prices had increased from KSh50 to KSh150 per kilo while sugar factories had resumed operations.

The ruling party additionally defended Ruto’s healthcare reforms, accusing Kenyatta of presiding over the collapse of the defunct NHIF and failing to implement universal healthcare.

UDA claimed that more than 31 million Kenyans had since been enrolled under the Social Health Authority and that over KSh150 billion had been paid to hospitals and health facilities within 18 months.

On education, the letter accused Kenyatta of leaving behind confusion in the Competency Based Curriculum system and failing to recruit enough teachers, saying the current administration had streamlined the curriculum into Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) and hired over 100,000 teachers.

The statement also revisited the contentious affordable housing programme, accusing Kenyatta of abandoning the project due to “cowardice, indecision, and political fear.”

UDA said more than 273,000 housing units are currently under construction nationwide under Ruto’s administration, with over 640,000 jobs allegedly created through the programme.

The letter singled out Kiambu County — Kenyatta’s political backyard — saying the government is undertaking affordable housing and social infrastructure projects worth approximately KSh60.6 billion in the county.

It cited the ongoing Gatundu Town Affordable Housing Project, Mutati Economic Stimulus Programme Market, student hostels at Gatundu TVET and Mama Ngina University, as evidence of development under the current administration.

UDA also accused Kenyatta of delaying the Mau Summit Road project for a decade through bureaucracy and indecision, while crediting Ruto with reviving construction works after terminating what it called “deadweight arrangements.”

The party further criticized Kenyatta over the stalled Jomo Kenyatta International Airport expansion project, referencing a past airport terminal launch that it described as “a canvas tent on the tarmac.”

It claimed procurement for a modern JKIA expansion project is now underway despite political resistance.

The letter also highlighted ongoing Talanta City, stadium construction and the proposed Bomas International Convention Centre project as examples of projects that had allegedly stalled under previous administrations.

On fuel prices, UDA accused Kenyatta of hypocrisy and recalled his widely publicized remarks during rising fuel costs under his administration, where he asked whether he was responsible for the Russia-Ukraine war.

The party blamed the previous administration for leaving behind a KSh156 billion fuel subsidy debt and fuel shortages.

It said the current administration was instead pursuing long-term energy security through local oil development in Turkana, regional refinery plans, electric mobility investments and renewable energy projects.

The letter then turned sharply political, accusing Kenyatta of mobilizing hostility against the Kenya Kwanza administration and inciting young people against the government.

“You are increasingly inciting young people against the government, exploiting their frustrations and emotions not to build the country, but to advance your political bitterness and vendetta,” the party stated.

UDA further accused the former president of quietly hoping the government fails to validate his earlier predictions of economic collapse.

The ruling party urged Kenyatta to conduct himself as a statesman and stop what it termed political sabotage against the current administration.

“The truth is painfully obvious — just as you did not want William Ruto to win, you now desperately want him to fail,” the letter said.

The statement comes amid escalating political tensions between allies of Ruto and Kenyatta as early political alignments ahead of the 2027 General Election continue to take shape.
