Nairobi is on course to join the league of top global conference destinations, with the design and scale of the Bomas International Convention Complex (BICC) in Lang’ata.

According to Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo, the facility’s architectural ambition and integrated layout are tailored to deliver a seamless, world-class experience for delegates, dignitaries and event organisers.

“The development of the Bomas International Convention Complex (BICC) in Lang’ata is repositioning Nairobi not just as a capital city, but as a regional socio-economic hub and gateway for global commerce, diplomacy and high-level engagements,” said Dr Omollo.

At the heart of the complex is a high-capacity design that places it among the largest convention facilities in East and Central Africa. The BICC will accommodate up to 11,000 delegates distributed across 35 purpose-built meeting rooms, allowing for simultaneous events and flexible conference configurations. Anchoring the facility is a 5,000-seat main auditorium designed for plenary sessions and major addresses, alongside a 3,500-seat secondary hall that expands its hosting versatility.

A standout feature of the complex is the Presidential Pavilion, a dedicated high-security enclave designed to host up to 30 heads of state. The pavilion is integrated into the broader layout to ensure controlled access, privacy and efficient movement for VIPs during global summits.

“The project signals Kenya’s growing stature in hosting world-class international events,” Dr Omollo added, underscoring the facility’s role within the global Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) ecosystem.

Beyond conference spaces, the BICC incorporates a mixed-use hospitality zone that blends functionality with visitor experience. The design includes multiple hotels, retail outlets and complementary amenities, among them an animal orphanage—an unusual addition that aligns the complex with Nairobi’s unique wildlife-tourism identity.

Infrastructure planning around the complex has been engineered to support large-scale events without disrupting city flow. The Bomas Ring Road, currently under development, will enhance access from Lang’ata Road and streamline traffic circulation within the precinct. The complex will also be physically linked to the nearby Raila Odinga International Stadium, enabling coordinated crowd movement during major events.

To further manage high visitor volumes, a structured parking system at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) precinct will regulate vehicle access, with controlled transit into the main venue via the ring road network.

Security and operational efficiency are central to the facility’s design. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is integrating advanced systems including smart surveillance, access control technologies and coordinated event security frameworks to ensure global standards are met.

“The State Departmen is enhancing the facility’s operational readiness by coordinating secure event management systems, facilitating seamless VIP movement and integrating smart surveillance and access control measures, ensuring the BICC operates as a safe, efficient and globally competitive convention hub,” Dr Omollo said.

Construction of the complex is being driven by a workforce of over 3,000 personnel working in continuous shifts, reflecting both the project’s scale and its emphasis on inclusive employment. Youth and women form a significant portion of the workforce across skilled, semi-skilled and support roles.
