The First European Club to Create Swahili Twitter Account

Italian club AS Roma is known for its wide social media presence with banter-filled tweets which arguably makes it one of the best social media accounts.

The club has recently launched a Swahili account as it tries to coerce East Africans to support the club. The decision to open the twitter account was initiated by a dare on twitter by a Kenyan after the club’s English account congratulated Eliud Kipchoge on his recent achievement.

The club’s co-owner and president, Jim Pallotta gladly bought the idea of opening a Swahili account and promised tweeps that the account will be ready before the end of the week. Pallotta responded by a tweet in Swahili where he promised East African Roma fans that the Twitter account will be created.

The new account was created Wednesday and the first tweet was of a cheeky video initially created by American comedians Michael Key and Jordan Peele captioned: “Roma Swahili Admin is here!!!”

This makes AS Roma the first European football club to have a Swahili account. European football is highly followed in East Africa but no club has ever bought the idea of having a Swahili social media account or even just tweeting in the language.

The club has been showing support to Kenya and East Africa in general. The club’s English account has frequently tweeted in Swahili from time to time in the recent past and the reactions from their Swahili-speaking fans have been wild.

Recently they played a part in helping two Kenyan kids reunite with their families. This is after they posted the pictures of the missing children while announcing new signings Chris Smalling and Henrik Mkhitaryan. The cub has been working hand in hand with Missing Child Kenya.
