Former Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho was considered one of the most powerful men in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cabinet. Working alongside then Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, he cultivated a reputation as a political fixer and determined government operative – earning him numerous foes, including many in President William Ruto’s camp.

But away from the world of politics, Kibicho is a businessman and has been associated with ventures including Abai Lodge in Kagio, Kirinyaga county.

During his time in public office, the lodge was preferred by Kibicho for many private meetings, including with high-level political allies such as Cabinet Secretaries.

The lodge features sprawling manicured lawns, a large swimming pool, restaurant, bar, fully-equipped gym and fitness centre, and luxurious rooms.

It also includes conference halls and facilities for meetings, targeting conventions and business travellers.

The rooms are categorized into executive, deluxe, and standard rooms. All rooms include modern fittings and amenities including free high-speed wi-fi.

Executive rooms, the most expensive, cost around Ksh15,000 a night, while it costs around Ksh7,000 to spend a night in the deluxe rooms, and around Ksh4,000 a night for the standard rooms.

The lodge hosts themed events featuring various DJs and artists. Among personalities who have previously performed at Abai lodge are popular Mugithi artist Samidoh and viral comedian Desagu.

Among figures spotted at the hotel for various meetings are Kibicho himself and former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya.

The lodge has risen to become one of the top attractions in Kirinyaga.

Welcoming guests, the lodge states; “From sumptuous meals with the family, to drinks with your boys and girls, our excellent restaurant gives you finger-licking food while our ambient bar keeps the drinks coming all through. Our highly professional wait staff offers you prompt and efficient services round the clock.”
