After getting into the dream jobs that we worked and prayed for, comfort creeps in. The aggressiveness and desire to be better somehow disappears when the pay check fills the self-satisfied need. This can turn one’s career into an oblivion.

Career management is a critical skill to have as a profession. This will keep one in check in ensuring career progression in every stage in life. One can develop this skills depending on which stage of career you are in.

Below are stages of career progression and how to thrive through them.

Career Assessment Stage 

This marks the beginning of one’s career, it can be right off after graduating from tertiary or secondary education. At this juncture, self-awareness is on the low. You are conscious of your strengths and weaknesses but not fully wise to what you need.

Knowing what you need is both simple and difficult, but understanding that gives one a clear picture of how they want to write their future. It is common that many make wrong career decisions in this stage or skipped it altogether. However, You just need to become self-aware, regardless of what level of experience you are in.

Career Investigation

This comes after one finds self-awareness. You now understand how the world of work functions. Looking for available options comes in as you try to keep your feet steady in a particular field of discipline.

Information overload is more likely to occur and cause confusion. Look for a mentor or network with veterans in that field. Learn from their experience and be willing to learn.

Career Preparation

Your career profile has grown and you are becoming an expert on your field courtesy of the skills and knowledge gained. At this stage one should set goals for his/her career and adopt a success-oriented mindset.

Even though you might not be in a job or field of your choice, take every experience you are going through as knowledge building. The skills you gain might come in handy later in your career.

Career Commitment 

You are now confident in this stage on what you want to do in your career. The focus should shift on career growth and development.

If you need to go back to school, then do so. Expand your networking in your industry and learn from them. As you excel, you will notice more responsibilities coming your way and even advance in your role.

Career Retention

At this point you are considered an influencer in your career, You are confident and comfortable. People consult you on professional opinion regarding different issues pertaining your area of expertise. You are now growing laterally by increasing your network of key stakeholders while being involved in projects and research.

However, do not get very comfortable and halt learning new things concerning your career. The world is changing everyday and you need to be up to date with the trends.

Career Transition

You have grown in your career and there is no more room for growth. This might be the time to think about transition or develop resilience. Resilience is for those who would very much like continue being involved in the day-to-day operations of the companies they work for or own.

Career transition is for individuals who want to take a more advisory role in the companies they work for or own. They may join the board or leave to pursue other interests within or outside their industry. The trick on this move is the timing, do not rush and regret or wait too long and become a burden.
