At Credit Bank, a lady takes the reins

Betty Korir is the latest to join the growing league of female corporate leaders in the banking sector after being appointed the chief executive of Credit Bank. Prior to this, she  acted as CEO for a month when then chief, Chege Thumbi, left the company for Sidian Bank in July.

Having been in banking for 20 years, she will be hoping to replicate her past success to sustain the growth of Credit Bank. Apart from being a veteran boasting the full support of her fellow employees – she has worked for the institution for the last four years and this is expected to give her a headstart.

Ms Korir also has the much-needed knowledge, being a holder of a Bachelor of Education Degree, Bachelor of Laws (Hons) LLB and a Master’s Degree in finance and marketing from the University of Nairobi.

She is a member of Global Association of Finance and Management (GAFM), Chartered Credit Analyst (CCA) and an associate of Kenya Institute of Bankers, a finalist in Banking Professional Qualification (AKIB) and a holder of various risk management certifications.

Before being elevated to acting CEO, she served the position of both the bank’s head of credit and the deputy chief executive. Prior to joining Credit Bank, she worked in the United Kingdom at Triodos Bank where she acquired international exposure in project finance and sustainable lending.

Moving forward, it will, however, not be a smooth ride to be able to help the small lender grow, especially at this time when the banking industry in Kenya is being hit hard by the interest rate caps introduced in 2016.
