Johnson Mwakazi’s voice is arguably one of the most iconic and recognizable in the country. While he always had journalistic talent and skill, it was his voice that made him stand out in the industry and cut a niche for himself. It’s therefore no surprise that 8 years after he left Royal Media Services (RMS)-owned Citizen TV, where he also spent 8 years, he is still the voice behind many of the station’s promos.
Nowadays, Mwakazi is the Director of The Royal Voice International, a multi-faceted media, PR and events company. Among other things, the firm produces adverts and documentaries in addition to offering voice over services. It also engages in conference planning and moderation, including MC services and facilitating interactive sessions.
Mwakazi’s Royal Voice International also offers inspirational talks and training – a forte of the former news anchor. He has previously opened up on his journey overcoming struggles including addictión to pornógraphy and masturbatión, as well as coming from poverty to becoming one of the biggest names in media.
Since leaving Citizen TV in 2014, Mwakazi also had stints as Brand Ambassador for Pan-African Life Assurance and, later, Editorial Director then CEO at Fountain Media Group.

Mwakazi was born and brought up in Kibera. As he’s previously recounted, he fell into addictión to pornógraphy as a teenager, and battled it for years even after becoming a born-again Christian.
After finishing high school, the situation at home got even tougher after his mother lost her job. Mwakazi ended up going to Kenya National Theatre (KNT) in hopes of landing acting gigs.
Here, he met someone who noticed his deep voice and eloquence, and alerted him to an opportunity for voice-over artists at RMS-owned Hot 96. He got the role and began voicing advertisements and earning a living.
Eventually, he applied for an opening at Citizen Tv which is also under the RMS banner, and ended up hosting The Power Breakfast show.
It wasn’t until 2008, 2 years into his time at RMS, that he enrolled at Daystar University for a Communications degree and graduated in 2013.
While it his recognizable voice that helped build his brand, his story is arguably even more impressive.
