Every other Madaraka Day, we (Kenyans) celebrate our founding fathers who put the greatest revolt pre-independence against colonial violence by dedicating much of their lives to leading anti-colonial liberation movements that inspired nationalism and fighting in bloody revolutionary wars like the Mau Mau rebellion, establishing in its place a self-governed Kenya and ending the cruel British system.
It was June 1, 1963, at a time of historic upheaval, when our country got internal self-rule. The white colonialists and their rule, characterized by tales of systematic gross human rights violations, including labor exploitation and killings, were dethroned, and the civilians took over power, forming the first-ever indigenous government founded upon principles of freedom, liberty, equality, and justice for all.

The special day came to be known as Madaraka Day, marked to date every June 1, and recognized as one of the national holidays in the Article 8 provision of the 2010 Constitution.
This year’s Madaraka Day ceremony will be the 61st. It will be held at the Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma County on the theme, “Promoting Agriculture and Food Security,” to improve food access in low-income communities while benefitting farmers and the overall economy.
Dr Raymond Omollo, the Principal Secretary (PS) for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, has said that the preparation to ensure the ceremony will be a success is underway, and roads and other amenities are being rehabilitated and upgraded to accommodate those who will attend the event.
He was speaking in Bungoma after a visit to the stadium to follow up on the progress made before the set date, coming up in not more than two months, adding that together with the planning committee and local leaders, plans to take adequate security measures are being initiated for that day.
Bungoma County Governor Kenneth Lusaka was present, and he urged his people to be economically aggressive when the day comes and use the opportunity to showcase and promote their businesses and services to lift their incomes.
The president of the Republic of Kenya usually leads the county in paying tribute to self-governance during Madaraka Day celebrations, and last year’s version, Madaraka 2023, which was celebrated at Moi Stadium in Embu County, was President William Ruto’s first since his election and was centered on upscaling small businesses.
