University lecturers in public universities are set to go on strike from October 2 after the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) issued a seven-day nationwide strike notice on Thursday.
UASU said the industrial action will begin at midnight on Friday, October 2, citing the failure by the Government, university councils and other stakeholders to honour commitments made under the November 5, 2025 Return-to-Work Formula.
The union is also protesting the prolonged stalemate over the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which is supposed to set pay and other employment terms for academic staff.
UASU Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga said negotiations had stalled because the Government and the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) had yet to table a financial counter-proposal, nearly a year after talks began.
The dispute follows an earlier one-month ultimatum issued by UASU on September 18, when the union gave the Government and IPUCCF until October 18 to conclude, sign, register and implement the new CBA. The latest strike notice brings the deadline forward, raising the prospect of disruption in public universities before the October 18 deadline.
Beyond pay, UASU has raised concerns about what it describes as systemic underfunding of public universities, inadequate staffing and excessive workloads. The union has also criticised the growing use of part-time lecturers as universities struggle to match rising student numbers with permanent academic staff.
Data from the Commission for University Education show adjunct academic staff more than doubled from 758 in 2024 to 1,611 in 2025. At the same time, the student-to-teacher ratio in public chartered universities increased from 40.77 students per teacher in 2023 to 44.36 in 2024.
UASU has also questioned the financing of academic staff salaries, arguing that remuneration for university academics should be protected through Exchequer funding rather than relying on student fees.
The union has raised concerns over retirement-age provisions and the treatment of experienced academics at a time when universities are increasingly recruiting part-time lecturers.
The threatened strike comes less than a year after a prolonged nationwide university staff dispute that disrupted learning in public universities in 2025. UASU says the latest action is intended to compel the Government and university councils to resolve the outstanding CBA and related employment issues.
The union’s national leadership, led by Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga and Chairperson Grace Nyongesa, has maintained that it has given the Government sufficient time to resolve the issues through negotiations.
