President William Ruto on Thursday cast his vote in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) grassroots elections at Koilel Primary School in Uasin Gishu County, as the ruling party rolled out internal polls across several parts of the country.

The elections are being conducted in 20 counties, with party members voting to elect officials at the polling-centre level, a process that UDA says is aimed at strengthening internal democracy and deepening grassroots participation in party affairs.

Speaking after voting, President Ruto commended the large number of candidates who presented themselves for leadership positions, noting that the turnout exceeded expectations. He said the enthusiasm demonstrated by aspirants and voters alike reflected growing confidence in the party and its political vision.

“I commend all the candidates for stepping forward in numbers far beyond expectation to offer leadership at the grassroots. Their commitment strengthens our party and advances the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which is anchored on inclusive growth and shared prosperity,” the President said.

Ruto also praised party members who turned out to participate in the elections, describing their involvement as a strong affirmation of democratic practice within the party. He underscored the importance of allowing members to freely choose leaders who best represent their interests and priorities.

The UDA grassroots elections form part of the party’s ongoing efforts to entrench participatory governance structures from the lowest levels, ensuring that leadership is built from the ground up. Party officials have said the exercise is intended to enhance accountability, cohesion and effective mobilisation ahead of future political activities.

“As a party, we remain firmly committed to democratic governance and responsive leadership that listens to the people and delivers on their priorities,” President Ruto said.

The elections are expected to pave the way for subsequent county, regional and national party structures, reinforcing UDA’s organisational base as it continues to position itself as a vehicle for grassroots-driven governance.
