Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo has called for greater recognition and empowerment of skilled workers, saying artisans such as tailors have an important role to play in Kenya’s economic development.
Omollo said nation-building required bringing together people, skills and opportunities, noting that every worker had a contribution to make towards the country’s progress.
Speaking after engaging members of the Nairobi Tailors Association (Maungano Chapter), he likened national development to tailoring, where different pieces of fabric are carefully joined to create a complete garment.
“Just as a tailor carefully joins pieces of fabric to create a garment that fits, nation-building requires bringing together people, skills and opportunities to shape a better country,” Omollo said.
The meeting, hosted by Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, brought together representatives of the association drawn from all 47 markets across Nairobi.
Omollo said government development initiatives were aimed at expanding access to infrastructure, creating economic opportunities and investing in citizens whose skills and labour drive economic growth.
He linked the engagement to the Usawa ni Sawa message, which he said recognised the importance of every contribution to national development, regardless of an individual’s occupation or social standing.
“The spirit of Usawa ni Sawa recognises that every contribution matters, and that the tailor, like every other skilled worker, has a rightful place in the country’s development story,” he said.
The engagement comes amid calls for greater support for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which provide livelihoods for many Kenyans operating in the informal sector.
Tailoring is among the trades that support urban livelihoods through clothing production, repairs, uniforms and other garment-related services.
Omollo’s message centred on the need to recognise artisans not merely as beneficiaries of development programmes but as active participants in economic transformation through their skills and enterprises.
