Peter Salasya, the flamboyant Kenyan parliamentarian known for his social media antics and populist rhetoric, has declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election, adding his name to an increasingly crowded field of aspirants.
The announcement, made on Monday morning on social media, shows the growing ambition among younger politicians to challenge the country’s established political elite.
“Fellow Kenyans, after deep reflection, wide consultations, and careful consideration of the state of our nation, I, Peter Kalerwa Salasya, the Member of Parliament for Mumias East Constituency, hereby declare my intention to vie for the Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the 2027 General Election,” the lawmaker said in a statement.
The 35-year-old Salasya, a first-term MP, pledged to address the economic struggles of ordinary Kenyans, particularly the youth. He said he has been motivated to vie for the seat due to a “profound desire to offer bold, transformative leadership that will reposition our great nation for industrial growth, economic empowerment, and social justice.”

“This movement will embody the dreams and aspirations of a new Kenya: a Kenya where opportunity is not a privilege for the few but for all of us,” Salasya stated.
Since he entered Parliament in 2022, he has been gaining attention for his unfiltered style and grassroots appeal, though critics question his readiness for the presidency now.
His candidacy joins a diverse list of contenders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, opposition leaders Martha Karua and Kalonzo Musyoka, and other regional heavyweights, all vying to succeed President William Ruto.
Kenya’s 2027 election is shaping up as a battleground between different visions for the country. President Ruto, who has not yet confirmed whether he will seek re-election, faces growing pressure over economic hardships and promises yet to be fulfilled, such as job creation and affordable healthcare.
Salasya’s entry highlights the evolving dynamics of the new-style politics, where social media influence and regional loyalties are increasingly shaping electoral strategies.
