A festive Easter disco in Oyugis, Homa Bay County, ended in tragedy on Friday night when two revellers were electrocuted, police have confirmed.

The incident occurred at a popular entertainment venue in Ragama Estate in Oyugis Town, where hundreds, mostly young revellers, had gathered to celebrate the holiday weekend.

According to Oyugis West Sub-Location Assistant Chief Warren Omollo, the victims, both in their 20s, were dancing in the open area of the nightclub when they came into contact with a live electrical cable at around 2 AM.

The cable, suspected to have been improperly installed or damaged, was connected to a high-voltage generator supplying the event’s sound system, and it was raining.

The sudden electric surge upon stepping on the naked wire killed the two men instantly, while a third, a young lady they were with, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses described a scene of chaos as the music stopped and screams filled the air. “It happened so fast,” said Mary Atieno, a 24-year-old attendee. “One moment we were dancing, and the next, people were shouting about a shock. It was terrifying.”

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, focusing on the venue’s electrical setup and safety protocols.

Rachuonyo South Sub-County Police Commander Philemon Saera said they have already cordoned off the site, and the club’s management has been summoned for questioning.

The tragedy has sparked outrage among residents, with many calling for stricter regulations on public venues, especially during this time when schools are closed.
