Mount Kenya University (MKU) is set to hold the Second International Conference on Peace, Security and Social Enterprise as part of its contribution to global peace.

The conference, which runs from Wednesday to Friday, is partly derived from the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 16, which is about “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”

“SDG 16 champions a society that is free of violence of all kinds; that protects its people from abuse; and that promotes the rule of law, ensuring equal access to justice and shared resources. This conference, therefore, contributes to the creation of such a society,” says MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi.

According to the World Bank, Kenya has lost about Ksh50.07 billion as a result of economic slowdowns during election years since independence.

Kenya has experienced a cycle of election-related conflicts almost every five years.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, the university has made a deliberate and conscious decision to contribute in our small way, to sensitise and raise awareness on the negative consequences of such conflict,” says the MKU VC.

The conference themed “The role of universities, public and private sectors in peacebuilding for socio-economic development” is set to bring together over 500 delegates.

Among the speakers of the event include Rev Dr Samuel Kobia, the Chairman of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), who will deliver a keynote speech on “Peace Advocacy in an Electioneering Period”.

“The Second International Conference on Peace, Security for Social Enterprise is our
way of making our contribution towards peaceful coexistence for all,” adds Prof Jaganyi.

Others who will speak during the conference include Daystar University Vice-Chancellor Dr Laban Ayiro, Ms Carole Kariuki, the CEO of Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), Prof Hubert Gijzen, UNESCO Regional Director, Nation Media Group (NMG) chief executive officer Stephen Gitagama and Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) chairperson, Mrs Anne Makori among others.
