SportPesa has pledged Ksh84 million in support for the Kenya men’s national rugby 7s team, Shujaa. This renewed two-year partnership with the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) aims to fuel Shujaa’s resurgence as they gear up for the 2024/25 HSBC World Rugby 7s Series, beginning on 30th November, 2024, in Dubai.

This sponsorship aligns with SportPesa’s Kenya long-standing commitment to accelerating growth in Kenyan sports on the global platform. Shujaa, who made a triumphant comeback after winning the 2023 Africa 7s and securing an Olympic berth, now has additional resources to enhance its training and performance.

The sponsorship includes Ksh33 million for the upcoming season and Ksh49.5 million for the 2025/26 season, complemented by an extra Ksh1.65 million dedicated to prize money in the 2025 National 7s Circuit.

SportPesa CEO’s Vision

At the sponsorship handover event, SportPesa CEO Captain Ronald Karauri shared his vision for Shujaa and the broader impact of the partnership: “Our support for Shujaa is a testament to our mission of nurturing sporting talent across Kenya,” Mr Karauri said. “Beyond financial backing, we are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of athletes and empowering Kenyan sports teams to achieve greatness.”

Mr Karauri emphasized that SportPesa’s support aims to ensure Shujaa is well-prepared to face international competition, fostering a sense of pride and national unity.

KRU Chairman mr Sasha Mutai expressed profound gratitude for SportPesa’s unwavering support. “SportPesa has been a steadfast partner, committed to the growth and success of Kenyan rugby. This funding will be essential for Shujaa’s journey in the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series, ensuring our athletes are equipped and motivated to perform at their best.”

Mr Mutai added that Shujaa’s recent achievements are a result of collective efforts from fans, players, and key supporters, fostering a rugby culture that continues to thrive.s

Shujaa’s road to redemption

Under the guidance of head coach Kevin Wambua and assistant coach Louis Kisia, Shujaa has made impressive strides, reclaiming the Safari 7s title and securing promotion back to the Series. In Pool A of the Dubai 7s opener, Shujaa will face formidable opponents including France, Australia, and South Africa.

Mr Kisia commended SportPesa’s critical role in Shujaa’s return, stating, “This sponsorship is a timely boost as we prepare to showcase our talent, resilience, and passion on the world stage,” he said. “With SportPesa’s support, we are more motivated than ever to make Kenya proud.”

Building a legacy for Kenyan rugby

This sponsorship deal reflects SportPesa’s dedication to creating sustainable pathways for Kenyan athletes. The strategic investment in Shujaa not only boosts the team’s chances of success but also supports Kenya’s reputation as a competitive rugby nation. As Shujaa embarks on its new journey, the partnership with the online gaming company paves the way for a promising era of growth, competition, and excellence in Kenyan rugby.

For fans and supporters, this announcement signals a new chapter in Shujaa’s legacy — one fuelled by national pride, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to representing Kenya on the global rugby stage.
