The government says the upgrade of the 20-kilometre Emali–Matiliku (A5) Road to bitumen standards is progressing well under Phase One of the 42-kilometre Ukia–Emali (B107) Road project launched by President William Ruto in November 2025.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the project will eventually connect Emali, Matiliku and Ukia, with future plans to extend connectivity to Wote Town.

In a statement, Omollo said the road is expected to improve the movement of people and goods, reduce transport costs and provide faster access to the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.

“The road is set to improve the movement of people and goods, provide faster access to the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway (A1), lower transport costs and strengthen trade by connecting Makueni’s productive agricultural areas to markets and essential services,” he said.

The Principal Secretary noted that improved transport links would support farmers and businesses by easing access to markets and public services.

Omollo also said implementation of the project is being supported by the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration through National Government Administration Officers (NGAO).

“Implementation continues to benefit from the support of the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration through the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), who are coordinating stakeholder engagement, safeguarding public infrastructure and promoting road safety along the corridor,” he said.

The Ukia–Emali road project is part of ongoing government efforts to improve road infrastructure in Makueni County and strengthen connectivity between agricultural areas and major transport corridors.
