Battle For Eyeballs: Citizen, KTN, NTV And TV47 Named Best-ranking Local TV Stations

The battle for eyeballs among Kenyan TV stations is taking a new shape, with new entrants putting a fight to steal the show from the big boys.

According to the latest GeoPoll ranking TV stations in Kenya, only Citizen and NTV have had over 10 million viewers in one week between September 3 to 9. Citizen TV had 22.8 million viewers while NTV had 10.7 million viewers.

Sister stations KTN and KTN News were ranked third and fourth with a cumulative audience of 9.3 million and 9.1 million respectively within the week.

Maisha Magic East, an entertainment TV station owned by Multichoice was ranked fifth with 8.5 million viewers ahead of the newly re-launched TV47, which had 6.9 million views.

Cape Media (which owns TV47) Operations Manager Wilson Mbugua attribyted the rise of the station to a collective effort from the staff.

“On behalf of Cape Media Management and the Board, I take this opportunity to congratulate the entire Cape Media fraternity for your unwavering collective contribution to ensure that we firmly position ourselves in the Kenyan media space. Congratulations for making TV47 to be amongst Kenya’s top TV stations. We continue marching forward,” Mbugua said.

Supersport, a sports station, was ranked seventh with 6.7 million viewers closely followed by K24 with 6.6 million viewers.

National broadcaster KBC was ninth with 6.4 million views while Tripple P TV, an entertainment channel popular with the youth closed the list of the leading 10 TV stations in Kenya with 5.5 million viewers.

As of March, the total number of broadcasting stations that were operational hit a new high of 195 TV stations according to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).
