The Port of Lamu today 15th July 2021 received a transhipment consignment of 62 containers from Zanzibar aboard a vessel MV AMU1 that dockedĀ at 3pm. The consignment belongs to the CMA CGM Shipping Lines.

The consignment is said to contain agricultural products from Zanzibar. It has 41 forty-foot containers and 21 twenty-foot containers equivalent to 103TEUs. The receipt of the consignment at the Lamu Port is a vote of confidence by the shipping industry. The dream of making Lamu the port of choice for exports, imports and transhipment hub is becoming a reality.

For its part, KRA has deployed the new ICMs Customs System at the Port to ensure faster clearance of cargo and enhance turnaround time to secure competitive advantage in the shipping industry and pull more business.

In addition, the management of KRA has deployed young, dynamic and experienced officers to offer efficient customs services to support the budding business at the new port.

KRA said itĀ  will continue to support and facilitate international trade and will work closely and partner with industry players who include the shipping lines, importers, exporters, clearing agents and logistics to enhance trade and market the port.

The authority supports the multi-agency approach whereby several government agencies represented at the port will work jointly to enhance efficiency and eradicate delays through common approach in solving trade-related issues and enhancing competitiveness of the Port.

“We encourage other shipping lines to use the Lamu Port and direct the biggest vessels to be served at this port given that the port has bigger capacity, efficient customs clearance process and waiver of transhipment fee,” said the Regional Coordinator Southern Region, Mr Joseph Tonui.
