US Fed Rate Pause, A Boost for NSE and Frontier Markets

The US Federal Reserve has kept interest rates unchanged, a development that could provide some relief to emerging and frontier markets, including Kenya’s Nairobi Securities Exchange(NSE).

The Fed maintained its benchmark rate at 3.75%–4.00% on 28th October 2026, despite elevated inflation.

Why the US Federal Reserve Decision matters:

– Capital flows: A less restrictive  rate outlook could improve the relative appeal of frontier-market assets as investors reassess opportunities outside the US.

– Foreign investor sentiment: If United States yields and the dollar ease, some foreign investors may become more willing to take on risk in markets such as the NSE.

– Valuations: Lower expectations for future interest rates can support equity valuations by reducing discount rates and improving financial conditions.

The caveat: A rate pause does not automatically mean capital will flow into frontier markets. The Fed’s forward guidance, US Treasury yields, the dollar, global risk appetite and local market fundamentals will remain important.

For the NSE, this is a potentially constructive external development, but sustained foreign inflows and improving market fundamentals will matter more than the announcement alone.

When trading ended at the NSE last week, the market was in the red, with NASI, N10, NSE 20, and NSE 25 easing by 2.3%, 3.5%, 1.7%, and 2.8%.

NSE Market activity advanced to US$ 348.3m on the back of a KSh 42Bn block trade on Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).

KPC dominated market activity, accounting for 93.4% of the week’s turnover. The counter’s price function advanced by 17.2% to KSh 10.55, doubling as the week’s best performing top mover and top gainer.

On the other hand, Safaricom, KCB Group, Equity Group, and DTB eased by 4.6%, 4.7%, 2.5%, and 0.3% to KSh 33.30, KSh 85.25, KSh 97.50, and KSh 186.25, respectively.

Standard Group slid 8.2% to KSh 5.82, emerging as the leading laggard, investors reacting to lack of substantive CEO following the resignation of Chaacha Mwiti. The media house has since appointed insider John Bundotich as acting CEO.

Foreign investors were net sellers, with net outflows of US$ 9.4m. Kenya Power led the buying charge, while Safaricom led the selling charge. Foreign investor activity expanded to 38.4% from 30.2% in the prior week.

Expected to feature this week is the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals IPO offer close on 27th October 2026 and the October 2026 Inflation Numbers on 30th October 2026
