NRG Radio was among the big winners at the “Best Of” Coronavirus Radio Ideas Awards on Thursday, November 12.

The urban radio station won ‘Best Virtual Concert’ for their We Are One Africa event which saw various leading artists perform to support the fight against Covid-19.

The station also took home the gong for ‘Best Sales Promotion’ for its free ads campaign.

The campaign saw NRG offer organizations the chance to advertise for free for a week. To select the winners, businesses were asked to explain what they wanted to achieve during the pandemic and how collaborating with NRG would help.

Other than the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), NRG was the only station to bag two awards at the virtual award ceremony.

Organized by P1 Media Group, the “Best of” Awards were created to celebrate global innovation in radio during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Winners were selected through voting by players in the radio industry from around the world.

NRG’s We Are One virtual concert took place over four weekends and brought on board several big names, including Betty Kyallo and Jalang’o as guest hosts.

The free ads sales campaign, on the other hand, was meant to support entrepreneurs and businesses affected by the shocks of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We know that Covid-19 affected so many businesses. Our clients who would otherwise spend money on the station to push their products or services cut down or completely put a halt on any advertising expenditure  and it was our time as a station to give back.

“These are unprecedented times for businesses in Kenya and world over. We had an option to wait out the situation or disrupt the gloomy atmosphere that came with Covid and lockdowns and we choose the latter,” explained NRG CEO and Chairman Kevin Mulei.

Other winners at the awards included UK’s BBC Radio 1, Scotland’s BFBS, Germany’s NDR and California’s Magic 92.5.

“What is even more satisfying is to know that besides BBC we were the only radio station nominated for two awards and we won both.  I am particularly so proud of the team for being so relentless and working hard during such a difficult season,” Mulei stated.
