The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Wednesday, October 28 launched a new road safety programme funded by the European Union (EU).

Dubbed Usalama Barabarani (Safe Roads), the campaign incorporates a raft of measures and projects meant to ensure positive road safety outcomes.

It will run for a period of three years, backed by the EU through the Support to Kenya Energy and Transport Sectors programme.

The programme will initially be launched in 7 counties including Kakamega, Kericho, Kisumu, Nakuru, Makueni and Nairobi, where the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) will take a leading role.

Among other things, the programme aims to enhance operations of the County Transport and Safety Committees.

The committees in each county include officers in charge of traffic, representatives of public service operators’ associations and a transport expert appointed by the governor.

The committees are largely responsible for the management and regulation of the road transport system by NTSA at the county level.

The Usalama Barabarani programme also aims to reduce the number of black spots through road safety audits.

It will also see increased efforts to raise awareness on road safety among members of the public.

Notably, the programme also has a focus on improving driver training and testing through automation.

It also incorporates projects meant to support the mainstreaming of road safety in the public service through performance contracting. The program will also see greater efforts to improve capacity of NTSA staff.
