MKU student clubs granted Sh3 million

Mount Kenya University Board of Directors chairman Prof. Simon Gicharu has granted student clubs and associations Ksh3 million to enable them hone their talents.

Prof Gicharu, who is also the founder of the university, has already awarded six clubs and associations with grants worth Ksh200,000 each to support creative activities the institution of higher learning.

The award is part of the Ksh3 million grant that was set aside for clubs and associations last year. The six clubs were selected after a thorough review by the grant selection committee chaired by Dr Evans Mwiti.

Prof Stanley Waudo, the Vice-Chancellor of Mount Kenya University, congratulated the patrons and students of the selected clubs and challenged them to promote professionalism and creativity.

During the ceremony, the following clubs and associations were feted: Catholic Association (YCS Enterprise project), Economics Club (Motivational Talk Project), Pharmacy Association (Reproductive Health ), Environmental Club (Tree Nursery Project), Christian Union (Christian Union Magazine ) and Student AIDS Information and Foundation (Slang Language Effect).

While congratulating the students, Prof Gicharu said he hoped the grants given will promote the spirit of nationalism and a culture of creativity among the students.

The grant initiative is a first in the country since traditionally university clubs and association fund-raise for their activities through their members. Prof Gicharu reminded the students that Mount University is committed to supporting student activities.
