Majid Al Futtaim, the leading shopping mall, communities, retail and leisure pioneer across the Middle East, Africa and Asia, today announced its plans to open a new hypermarket at Galleria Shopping Mall on Langata Road in July 2018.

The hypermarket will be Carrefour’s sixth store in Nairobi as the retailer seeks to respond to changing customer needs and cater to the growing demand for formal and modern retail in the capital and its surroundings.

“We will open the new store at Galleria at the end of next month, using a partial selling model of 1,000 square metres. This is similar to what we have successfully implemented at our Thika Road Mall and Junction Mall stores and allows us to cater to some of the most immediate shopping needs of customers who live and work near Galleria,” said Franck Moreau, Country Manager of Carrefour Kenya at Majid Al Futtaim Retail.

The new store is located in an area that did not previously offer its residents any form of modern retail, despite a growing population in that area. With the new store Carrefour will be able to provide residents of the Karengata area an unrivalled shopping experience, delivering its bespoke quality offering and value for money. The Galleria Shopping Mall opened in 2010 on a 12-acre piece of land and has developed into a vibrant shopping, dining and lifestyle destination.

Moreau continued: “Our ambition is to scale up our operations from the partial selling model to a fully-fledged hypermarket of more than 5,000 square metres by mid- 2019. We will then offer the full range of over 30,000 food and non-food products to our customers living in Langata, Karen and along Magadi road as well as areas beyond these residential areas, continuing to create great moments for everyone every day.”

Majid Al Futtaim currently operates five Carrefour stores in Kenya at The Hub in Karen, Two Rivers Mall, Thika Road Mall, The Junction and Sarit Centre. The retailer is also opening its first Carrefour Market, its supermarket format, at the Village Market in December.

With the new store, the conversion of the stores on Thika Road Mall, The Junction Mall and Sarit Centre, and other developments in the pipeline, Carrefour Kenya which started operations in 2016, will have contributed towards the creation of 2,700 new employment opportunities by 2019.
