Preparations for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir County are nearing completion, with the government expressing confidence in the level of readiness ahead of the national event.
In a statement on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Interior Ministry said significant progress has been made across key infrastructure and logistical components, following an inspection tour led by Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and his Defence counterpart Patrick Mariru.
The delegation, which included officials from various ministries, departments and agencies, was received by Wajir Governor Ahmed Jiir and county leadership. Both levels of government have been working jointly to prepare for the celebrations, which will mark the first time the event is held in Northern Kenya.
Officials noted that the main stadium is currently between 65 and 70 percent complete, with construction progressing at a pace expected to see it finished at least two weeks ahead of schedule. Road works within Wajir town and along key access routes are ongoing, alongside renovations at the County Commissioner’s residence, which will host the official State luncheon.
Additional improvements are being made to essential services, including water supply through borehole drilling and distribution systems, as well as enhanced electricity stability following the installation of generators.
Dr. Omollo said the government is satisfied with the progress so far, citing strong coordination between national and county authorities.
“We are encouraged by the progress made so far and the strong collaboration between the National Government and the County Government. From the stadium to roads, water, and power, all key infrastructure is on course, and we are confident that Wajir will be ready ahead of time to host a successful Madaraka Day celebration,” he said.
He added that the decision to host the celebrations in Wajir reflects the government’s commitment to inclusivity and equitable development across all regions.
“This will be a historic moment for the people of Wajir and the entire Northern Kenya region. As a Government, we are proud to take national celebrations to all parts of the country, ensuring that every region feels part of our national journey and development,” he said.
The government also announced that a series of exhibitions and public engagement activities will take place in the lead-up to June 1, aligned with this year’s theme, Education, Skills, and the Future.
Authorities have assured Kenyans that all necessary measures are being put in place to ensure a successful and inclusive national celebration.
