Wajir Town is set for a major infrastructure and economic boost as the government accelerates road upgrades and urban improvements ahead of this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, which will be hosted in the North Eastern region for the first time.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the decision to hold the national celebrations in Wajir is part of a broader government policy aimed at rotating key national events across regions to promote inclusive development and spread economic opportunities beyond major urban centres.
According to the PS, the ongoing works by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority and the Kenya National Highways Authority are expected to improve mobility, stimulate trade and support long-term urban growth in the county.
The infrastructure upgrades include the tarmacking of key road networks within Wajir Town and surrounding areas to bitumen standards as part of preparations for the national event.
Beyond hosting Madaraka Day celebrations, the improvements are expected to position Wajir as a more connected commercial hub in northern Kenya, easing the movement of goods and people while attracting new investment opportunities.
“The upgraded corridors are being designed to sustain a vibrant 24-hour economy,” Dr Omollo said in a statement.
The roads are also being fitted with solar-powered street lighting, pedestrian crossings and other urban safety features aimed at improving accessibility and supporting business activity beyond daytime hours.
Analysts say improved infrastructure in historically underserved regions can help unlock local economies by lowering transport costs, enhancing market access and encouraging growth in sectors such as retail trade, logistics and hospitality.
The government has increasingly used national celebrations as catalysts for infrastructure spending in host counties, with investments often extending to roads, markets, stadiums and public utilities.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also coordinating security and public order measures ahead of the event to support both the celebrations and the town’s longer-term urban transformation.
The hosting of Madaraka Day is expected to bring increased business activity to Wajir through demand for accommodation, transport, food services and other hospitality-related sectors as visitors, government officials and traders converge in the town.
