Who wanted Gilbert Kinyua, the man who was murdered in Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), dead? The second day after the fatal incident in one of the hospital’s wards, the case is still unresolved, with no clear suspects yet.
Business Today understands that KNH began “working closely with law enforcement authorities” on that day, February 7, when Kinyua was found dead in Ward 7B with his throat slit. However, a series of mysteries remain about who committed the crime and even when, exactly, the murder occurred.
The murder weapon—a kitchen knife stained with blood—was recovered at the scene, and officials are attempting to use DNA evidence after failing to retrieve surveillance photos or videos from the hospital’s CCTV cameras, which were reportedly not working that night.

At the ward where the deceased had been staying since last December when he was admitted for a cerebral disorder, he had two roommates, but neither saw the face of the killer. According to The Star, he was with an incapacitated and deaf cancer patient at the time of the attack.
Police say Kinyua, 39, was targeted in a pre-planned killing, but they have yet to determine a motive.
National Police Service spokesperson Michael Muchiri said they are working on the case, with officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kilimani Area Headquarters, having already taken charge.
In a recent interview with journalists, Kinyua’s wife shared that her husband had been working as a water technician in a Nairobi-based company before falling ill and being admitted to KNH.
She expressed shock that such an incident could occur in the country’s largest referral hospital, which she had trusted to help treat her husband of 11 years to full recovery.
