Japanese consumer goods manufacturer Unicharm Corporation is deepening its presence in Kenya through a Ksh 2 billion joint venture aimed at expanding sanitary product manufacturing and distribution across East Africa.

The investment brings Unicharm together with Toyota Tsusho Corporation and CFAO Kenya Limited under SOFY Unicharm East Africa Limited, a business that will oversee product development, production, sales and marketing in Kenya.

The company plans to use the country as a base for supplying neighbouring markets, giving the investment a regional focus beyond competition for Kenyan consumers.

Its entry comes at a time when affordability remains a major consideration in the personal care market. For sanitary pad manufacturers, reaching more consumers requires balancing product quality with prices that households can manage, particularly when purchasing essential items on limited budgets.

SOFY Unicharm East Africa has already tested different price points in Kenya through its existing product range. The SOFY brand entered the market in 2023 with Deep Absorb sanitary pads before introducing SOFY Long Lasting in January 2025. The latter is manufactured locally and targets consumers seeking a more affordable option.

The company has also introduced single-pad sachets after receiving feedback that the cost of sanitary products can prevent some consumers from accessing them.

The move reflects a market reality that packaging and purchasing habits matter alongside the price printed on a product. A large pack may offer better value per pad, but a consumer without enough money for the full package may have to settle for a smaller quantity.

Whether this strategy delivers lasting improvements in affordability will depend on retail pricing, product availability and the cost of buying sanitary pads over time.

Kenya becomes a base for regional growth

The joint venture will combine Unicharm’s experience in hygiene products with Toyota Tsusho’s and CFAO Kenya’s business capabilities.

By bringing several functions under one local operation, the company intends to strengthen its presence in Kenya while developing a supply network for other East African countries.

For the local economy, the investment offers potential benefits through manufacturing activity and regional trade. However, the size of those benefits will depend on how much production takes place in Kenya, the extent of local sourcing and the number of jobs created.

The company has not announced specific employment projections, production targets or expected export volumes.

These measures will provide a clearer picture of whether the venture becomes a significant manufacturing operation or primarily serves as a sales and distribution hub.

Unicharm Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Takahisa Takahara said the decision to incorporate SOFY into the subsidiary’s corporate name reflected the group’s commitment to the region.

“By elevating SOFY into our company name, we are declaring our strong commitment to standing beside women in East Africa, understanding their needs, supporting their possibilities, and growing together with them,” Takahara said.

He added that the company hopes to expand into other personal care categories in the future, including baby care products such as diapers.

Such diversification could create additional growth opportunities, although the company will first need to establish a strong position in its existing product categories.

Menstrual hygiene remains a key part of the business

Alongside its commercial expansion, SOFY Unicharm East Africa is positioning menstrual health education as part of its work in Kenya.

The company has partnered with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the United Nations Population Fund and UN Women Kenya on initiatives designed to improve menstrual hygiene awareness and encourage open discussions about menstruation.

It cited estimates indicating that approximately 54 per cent of girls in Kenya have experienced challenges accessing sanitary products, highlighting the continued difficulties faced by some students and households.

The challenge extends beyond whether sanitary pads are available in shops. Household finances, access to information and adequate sanitation facilities can also influence how girls manage their periods, particularly in school environments.

Daigo Fujiwara, managing director of SOFY Unicharm East Africa Limited, said the company intends to combine product access with efforts to address these barriers.

“By providing reliable feminine care solutions, promoting better hygiene habits and addressing period poverty, we aim to empower women to live with greater confidence and participate fully in society,” Fujiwara said.

The company plans to continue working with communities, non-governmental organisations and government institutions to develop initiatives suited to local needs.

For the business, these partnerships may help it understand consumers and build trust. Their social impact, however, will depend on whether affordable products reach the girls and women who need them most.

Sustainability and competition will shape future prospects

The company has identified waste management, responsible product use and resource circulation as priorities in its sustainability strategy.

These issues will become increasingly important if production and sales expand across the region. Disposable sanitary products require effective waste management, and growing sales must be accompanied by practical measures to address their environmental footprint.

SOFY Unicharm East Africa will also need to establish a competitive position in a market where consumers weigh price, comfort, product quality and availability when choosing sanitary products.

The Sh2 billion investment provides a foundation for that expansion, but long-term growth will depend on execution. Competitive prices, consistent supply and a successful export strategy will determine whether the Kenyan operation can deliver returns while reaching more consumers.

For Kenya, the opportunity lies in converting the investment into lasting manufacturing capacity and regional trade. For consumers, the more immediate measure of success will be whether the company’s products become more accessible without compromising quality.
