Shaky start at NSE as trading stumbles Sh236 million

Trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) opened the week with a total of 7.9 million shares valued at Ksh270 million, against 13 million shares valued at Ksh506 million posted on Friday.

The bourse also saw all indices take a dive. The NSE 20 Share Index dropped 36.89 points to stand at 3259.37 while the All Share Index (NASI) shed 1.65 points to settle at 171.33. The NSE 25 Share index shaved-off 71.60 points to stand at 4372.10.

The Bond Market had however did marginally better with bonds worth Ksh 2.8 billion transacted. On Thursday, the NSE had posted bonds worth Ksh1 billion changing hands.

Sectors Wrap

The Agricultural Sector had shares worth Ksh1.4 million traded & accounted for 0.52% of the day’s turnover. Williamson Tea moved 5,200 shares valued at Ksh1.4 million and closed the day at Ksh167.

In the Banking Sector, shares worth Ksh189 million transacted, accounting for 70% of the day’s traded value. Equity Group Holdings actively moved 3.1 million shares valued at Ksh156 million. The share price for Equity traded at between Ksh49 and Ksh50.

KCB Group was down fifty cents to Ksh47.50 and moved 421,000 shares valued at Ksh20.7 million. Co-op Bank meanwhile moved 281,000 shares worth Ksh4.4 million and closed at Ksh16.

The Energy & Petroleum Sector had shares worth Ksh1.8 million traded & accounted for 0.69% of the day’s turnover. Kengen was unchanged at Ksh6.55 , moving 147,000 shares valued at Ksh971,000. Kenol Kobil moved 22,000 shares valued at Ksh384,000 and closed at Ksh17.20.

In the Insurance Sector, shares worth Ksh26.8 million transacted which represented 9.93% of the day’s traded value. Kenya-Re closed 1.8% higher to Ksh16.80 moving 1.4 million shares valued at Ksh23.9 million. Sanlam Kenya traded 90,000 shares valued at Ksh2.1 million and closed at Ksh24.

The Investment Sector had shares worth Ksh943,000 transacted which represented 0.35% of the day’s traded value. Centum was unchanged at Ksh34.00 and had 25,000 shares valued at Ksh861,000 transacted.

The Manufacturing & Allied Sector had shares worth Ksh473,000 transacted which represented 0.18% of the day’s traded value. E.A Breweries shares slipped by 4.87% to Ksh194 with shares worth Ksh122,000 transacted.

For the Telecommunication Sector, Safaricom moved 1.6 million shares valued at Ksh48 million at between Ksh29 and Ksh29.50; this represented 17.81% of the day’s traded value.
