Kenya’s rural electrification programme has connected 1,597,586 customers to electricity between September 2022 and June 14, 2026, as the government steps up efforts to extend power access to previously underserved communities.
The expansion has been driven by government investment, donor-funded projects, grid extensions and the development of mini-grids targeting remote settlements across the country.
Nyanza recorded the highest number of new connections at 321,010, followed by the Rift Valley with 313,893 connections. The Coast region registered 196,191 connections, while Central Kenya recorded 190,090.
The increased access to electricity is expected to support economic activity in rural areas by enabling households and businesses to move away from costly and less reliable alternatives.
In villages such as Garsen in Tana River County and Ndori in Siaya County, residents have reported benefits extending beyond household lighting.
Electricity has reduced reliance on solar lamps while enabling businesses to operate for longer hours. It has also supported enterprises such as phone-charging shops and other small-scale businesses that depend on reliable power.
The continued rollout is part of broader efforts to bridge Kenya’s rural-urban development gap, with improved electricity access expected to support productivity, digital connectivity and the growth of small businesses.
However, affordability remains a key challenge, particularly for low-income households. Ensuring that newly connected customers can afford electricity and use it sustainably will remain critical to maximising the economic benefits of the electrification programme.
The latest figures point to significant progress in expanding electricity access, but also highlight the need for continued investment to ensure that communities still outside the national grid are connected.
