Matiangi appoints new chairpersons for public universities

Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiangi has appointed new chairpersons for public universities. This follows the expiry of expiry of tenure of the councils of 22 state-owned universities. “I am pleased to announce that I have duly constituted new Councils in pursuant to the provisions of the Universities Act,” he said.

The Councils include those of University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Moi University, Egerton University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Maseno University, Technical University Mombasa, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and Karatina University, among others.

The appointments have been made to reflect ethnic balance with most of the main communities and minority tribes getting a slot. The cabinet secretary has also revealed the ethinic affiliation of each appointee, in what could raise questions about the basis of the appointments.

The appointments are contained in a Special Issue of the Kenya Gazette reference Vol. CXIX – No. 31 dated 13^th March 2017.
