President William Ruto is set to commission the Lumumba Affordable Housing Project in Kisumu on Saturday, August 31, 2024.
The project, which kicked off in July 2024 and is expected to be completed in January 2026, is a 2,384-unit residential project located in Kisumu Central Constituency in Kisumu County.
The project is being built on land belonging to the County Government of Kisumu which was formerly a brownfield with dilapidated houses belonging to the County Government.
The Project Affected Persons were compensated to facilitate their relocation from the area in March 2024.
The Lumumba AHP Project will integrate social housing, affordable housing, and affordable market housing units.
It will entail 452 social housing units, 1,192 affordable housing units and 740 market housing units.
The associated infrastructure will include two waste receptacles, three guard houses, play areas, and parking spaces. This will also include associated civil, mechanical and electrical works.
The project is located close to the town centre which has all amenities in terms of schools, commercial centres, hospitals, and social recreational areas. Notably, the site is next to Kaloleni Muslim Primary School and close to United Mall and Kisumu Polytechnic.
The Lumumba Affordable Housing project is expected to provide economically affordable housing options for the population in Kisumu Central Constituency, hence improving living conditions and housing security for low and middle-income families and reducing the burden of accessing decent housing.
The project is also tipped to be a trigger for the establishment of essential amenities such as roads, water supply, sewage systems, and electricity, fostering overall community development and sustainable urban planning.
Lumumba project to provide employment
The construction and development phase will generate a significant number of employment opportunities, attracting skilled and unskilled labour to the region. The project currently employs an average of 92 labourers.
Similarly, marginalized groups and vulnerable populations in Kisumu Central Constituency will have an equal opportunity to own or rent homes, promoting social cohesion and equitable access to housing resources.
The Lumumba Housing project is also expected to improve the quality of life through access to safe, secure, and well-designed housing.
Children will have conducive environments for learning, and families can thrive in a setting that promotes safety and comfort.
