The government has stepped up efforts to prepare young people for opportunities in the digital economy through the Jitume Youth Digital Empowerment Centre at Kitale National Polytechnic, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo has said.

In a statement, Omollo described the facility as a key pillar of the government’s Digital Superhighway Programme, saying it is equipping youth with the skills and tools required to compete in the rapidly growing digital marketplace.

According to the PS, the centre was established through the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy in partnership with Konza Technopolis and the ICT Authority to help bridge the country’s digital divide.

“A key pillar of the Government’s Digital Superhighway Programme, the Jitume Youth Digital Empowerment Centre at Kitale National Polytechnic is equipping young people with the skills and tools needed to participate in the digital economy,” Omollo said.

He noted that the centre provides an inclusive learning environment through modern infrastructure designed to support digital training and innovation.

The facility is equipped with 100 Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) workstations, high-speed fibre internet connectivity and disability-friendly infrastructure to ensure Persons with Disabilities can equally access digital learning opportunities.

Omollo said the centre is positioning students to tap into the global digital economy through specialised training in high-demand digital skills.

“The centre serves as a gateway to the global digital marketplace. Through training in data analytics, software development, content creation and emerging digital skills, as well as mentorship under the Ajira Digital Programme and other industry partnerships, students are able to access online work opportunities and earn income from global freelance platforms while pursuing their studies,” he said.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to create jobs for young people by expanding access to digital skills and online employment opportunities.

The PS also highlighted the role of the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration in supporting the country’s digital transformation agenda by promoting cybersecurity and protecting critical digital infrastructure.

“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration supports the safe operation of such facilities by promoting cybersecurity awareness, strengthening digital safety and working with relevant agencies to safeguard critical digital infrastructure against cyber threats and online crime,” Omollo said.

The government has been rolling out Jitume Digital Hubs across the country as part of its Digital Superhighway Programme, with the centres expected to equip thousands of young Kenyans with market-driven digital skills and connect them to local and international online work opportunities.
