Kenyan Billionaire’s Wedding Gift To YouTube Couple Shocks Africa

The popular YouTube couple Berthold Ackorn popularly known as Wode Maya and Gertrude Awino known as Miss Trudy held their wedding in Yala, Siaya County, on 10th September, 2022. They received two apartments as wedding gifts from Mwale City investor, Mr Julius Mwale.

According to a video shared on YouTube, the couple says they received wedding gifts from their fans and supporters including Leah Wambui, a real estate developer in Athi River who bought the couple wedding rings. Photo from such high profile wedding would certainly look great on Canvas Prints.

The wedding reception was held at Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC), a $ 2 billion (Ksh200 billion) metropolis in Butere owned by tycoon Mwale near Awino’s Yala home. In the video, Mr Mwale is seen giving Wode Maya the tour of the two-bedroom apartment at Mwale City and gifting it to him as a wedding gift, and  another one bedroom to Miss Trudy.

The tycoon known for his generosity has built rental apartments for locals within MMTC to rent to workers within the City which is anchored by a 5,000-bed Hamptons Hospital.

“We spent only $1000 (Ksh115,000) on our wedding but God brought people who helped us with everything else,” said  Awino who met her spouse Wode Maya,  a Ghanaian three years ago during a YouTube assignment in Ethiopia. Wode Maya is the largest Youtuber in Ghana and commands over one million subscribers on his YouTube channel. Miss Trudy has more than 300,000 subscribers on YouTube. Their channels are popular for highlighting positive African stories.

Mr Mwale’s gifts to the couple highlights the power of digital media in Africa, where  young African influencers command wider reach across the continent on social media, and are getting noticed by mainstream corporations.

Business Daily reported that the tycoon recently expanded to the Democratic Republic of Congo with investment into a battery manufacturing plant,  to power his smart cities across Africa including Ghana.

“The gift by the tycoon to Maya (Wode) although very generous may indirectly aid the tycoon’s projects in Ghana where Wode Maya commands a huge following,” said Mr Joe Sam, a district chief in Ghana.
