Kenya has been officially selected to host the opening leg of the HSBC SVNS 2, World Rugby announced today, cementing Nairobi’s status as one of the newest global destinations for elite international rugby.

The tournament, set for February 14–15, 2026, will kick off the second season of the revamped world sevens circuit and mark the first time the event lands on East African soil.

The Nairobi round will be the first stop of a three-leg series, with subsequent tournaments scheduled for Brazil and Uruguay. The decision marks a major milestone for Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) and elevates the country’s profile as a growing force in the global rugby landscape.

Four Nations to Contest Men’s Division

The men’s competition will feature four teams battling for early advantage in the promotion race:

  • Kenya
  • USA
  • Uruguay
  • Germany

With promotion at stake, the Nairobi event promises high-intensity clashes and a showcase of some of the fastest-rising rugby sevens nations.

Lionesses Headline Women’s Division

The women’s tournament will feature:

  • Kenya Lionesses
  • Brazil
  • China
  • Spain

The Lionesses will be looking to use home support to their advantage as they take on experienced international opponents in what is expected to be one of the most competitive women’s fields in the SVNS 2 calendar.

Kenya Rugby Union Chairperson Harriet Okach welcomed the announcement, describing it as a transformative moment for Kenyan rugby.

“Kenya Rugby Union is honoured by the trust World Rugby has placed in us to host the HSBC SVNS 2 on 14th – 15th February 2026,” she said.

“This milestone presents a significant opportunity for Kenya Rugby and the nation at large. Hosting this event will strengthen our global presence, expand commercial potential, and inspire the next generation of players.”

“We are committed to delivering an exceptional, world-class event that showcases elite rugby, celebrates our fans, and highlights the unique cultural vibrancy of Kenya. We look forward to welcoming the global rugby family to Nairobi for an unforgettable SVNS experience.”

Planning for the event has already begun, with Nairobi expected to host thousands of fans, players, officials, and global rugby stakeholders. The tournament is projected to generate major economic benefits, boost sports tourism, and deepen Kenya’s reputation as a premier destination for international competition.

World Rugby is expected to release more details, including match schedules, ticketing, fan activities, and logistics, in the coming months.

For Kenya, a nation with a passionate rugby fan base and a long history in the global sevens circuit, the confirmation marks a historic step toward becoming a central hub for rugby in Africa and beyond.
