The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a traffic advisory warning motorists to expect major delays along the Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit (A8) Highway on Friday, November 28, 2025, when President William Ruto is scheduled to officially launch the upgraded road.

According to a public notice released on Wednesday, KeNHA said the highway will experience significant congestion throughout the day, as the president will preside over a series of events at different points along the 175-kilometre corridor.

To ease the expected disruption, the Authority is urging motorists to either reschedule their travel or use any of the four alternative routes provided. These include the Ngong–Suswa–Narok–Mau Narok–Njoro–Nakuru route; Nairobi–Thika–Magumu–Njabini–Ol Kalou–Nakuru; Nakuru–Kampi ya Moto–Ravine–Makutano; and Nakuru–Njoro–Molo–Mau Summit.

“We urge all motorists plying these sections of the road to replan their journeys accordingly, and any inconvenience is regretted,” said Eng. Luka Kimeli, KeNHA’s Acting Director General.

The Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit highway forms part of the Northern Corridor, a critical artery linking the Port of Mombasa to Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, eastern DRC and South Sudan. It carries more than 30 million tonnes of cargo annually, making it the busiest transport and trade route in East Africa.

The project being launched is one of Kenya’s most ambitious infrastructure upgrades and is being implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP). The overhaul includes expanding sections of the road into a dual carriageway, rehabilitating existing lanes, building new interchanges, and installing enhanced safety features.

The upgrade is expected to cut travel time between Nairobi and Nakuru, ease chronic congestion, reduce accidents, and lower the cost of transporting goods across the region.

KeNHA said the traffic disruptions would be temporary but necessary to facilitate the high-profile launch. The Authority assured motorists that traffic police and KeNHA teams would be deployed along the corridor to help manage movements and minimize delays.

The road’s modernization marks a key milestone in Kenya’s broader effort to strengthen its transport network, improve competitiveness, and support regional integration.
