Women in Meru took to the streets on September 18 protesting the alleged murder of Mary Kapolon, daughter to Meru Senior Resident Magistrate Carol Kemei.
The demonstrations brought Meru town to a standstill to the extent that Governor Kiraitu Murungi, en-route to the magistrate’s home to offer his condolences, had to alight from his car to address the livid women incensed by what they termed as murder.
“I urge investigative agencies to speed up the probe and leave no stone unturned until the young girl’s tormentors face the full force of the law,” said Governor Murungi.
Kapolon’s body was found in Gitoro Forest in Imenti North, Meru County on September 16 by a Meru resident who alerted the police.
The 9 year old girl who had been missing since September 6 was killed in gruesome circumstances with reports indicating that her body had cuts on the thighs and her hand was burnt with acid.
Two Non-Governmental Organisations, Ripples International, a children’s rights lobby group and the Centre for Rights, Education and Awareness (CREAW), a women rights lobby group want investigative agencies to probe her death and the perpetrators brought to book.
The two NGOs led a protest where women bearing placards marched to Meru County Commissioner Wilfred Nyangwanga’s office to seek justice for Kapolon decrying rampant insecurity in the county.
Speaking to the women, County Commissioner Nyagwanga said the police have already arrested two suspects in relation to the case adding that one of them was seen with the deceased one day before her death.
