The Government has announced that construction of the Gikambura Modern Market in Kiambu County is substantially complete, with only minor internal and external finishing works remaining before the facility becomes operational.
The market, whose construction began in May 2024, is expected to accommodate more than 340 traders and is being positioned as a key investment in local enterprise and economic growth as Kenya looks beyond the 2030 development agenda.
In a statement, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr Raymond Omollo said the project reflects the need to back national development aspirations with practical investments that create opportunities at the community level.
The facility includes 100 shops and 208 stalls, as well as a social hall, meeting rooms, offices, an ICT hub, food court and kitchen, salon and barbershop, crèche, cold room, butchery and other supporting amenities. It also provides parking space and a children’s play area.
Dr Omollo said the market is expected to provide a more orderly and dignified trading environment while strengthening agro-based commerce and value addition in Gikambura, an area known for crop farming and dairy production.
He added that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has been supporting coordinated implementation of the project by facilitating security at the site, smooth operations and collaboration among the agencies and stakeholders involved in its completion.
The project is part of the government’s broader push to expand market infrastructure, support small businesses and create employment opportunities through modern trading facilities.
Once opened, the market is expected to enhance trading conditions for local entrepreneurs and improve market access for agricultural producers in Kiambu County.
